Ever since I was a little girl, I've held onto consumables, not wanting to "use them up." I remember a brides coloring book. I didn't want to use it up, so just kept my favorite pages blank until a special occasion. That special occasion never came and I never experienced the joy of coloring my favorite pictures. I also somehow smuggled some firecrackers in from Canada as a kid. My next door neighbor would often come over, knowing I had them, and try to persuade me to use the firecrackers with our group of friends and have some fun. My response was I was saving them for a special occasion. Alas, they were never used.
My point is, I am trying to make a new start to just enjoy consumables, not worrying if I'll use them up. This includes fun notepads, stationery, candles, lotions, soaps, etc. I have a posted notepad at school I've held on for probably 7 years, rarely using it, because I like it and didn't want it used. However, this week I'm using it up and with two more tear offs, it will be gone. I'm also burning favorite candles and enjoying them while I have them.
Keep it up! One week down, as a couple of you commented.
*Simplify - thanks for sharing this thought today! Definitely worth thinking about and acting upon! :)
ReplyDeleteWords well spoken...to simplify is not just throwing away or hauling to Goodwill...it is also using what you already have...
ReplyDeleteHeidi, thanks so much for doing this for all of us. You have been quite an inspiration to me! Last night, between game predictions and kick-off, I cleaned out 3 drawers and tossed one bag of "stuff"...
Zipper still in container - put in yard sale bag. it seems a pitiful contribution, but it's all I have time for today!
ReplyDeleteWell, I didn't check in yesterday, but I did get rid of a remote for a TV that I still own. The remote doesn't communicate with the TV anymore. For today I threw away a piece of clothing. I am glad for the idea of using up the consumables. It is a lot of fun and freeing when the tablet or the notepad is all gone. Enjoy. I also threw out a pedometer that should show 5 digits (remember "walk 10,000 steps"?) but the digit in the thousands place doesn't work. So from 999-9999, I would not know how many steps I walked. "Oh, but I could fix it", I thought. Nope, out it goes.
ReplyDeleteTonight my husband announced that since I purchased the new $4 couch pillows, the old ones look old and stinky (not sure what "looking" stinky really is). He asked if we could throw them away. Happily! That's 4 pillows fewer....into the trash they go! Love that TV remote idea! Why I keep 4 extras that don't communicate, I don't know. I'll have to toss those tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteat the end of the day my husband gave me 7 t-shirts for the give-away box after he had cleaned out his t-shirt drawer. hurray! now my small little zipper isn't so pitiful. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Heidi. Permission to actually use up our favorite things. I will use up the shampoo & conditioner Christian ordered for me as a gift when I told him specifically what I wanted. 3 years ago Glen & I went to Maui and the hotel had this wonderful smelling shampoo, conditioner & lotion. I came home with these wonderful samples. I found the same product online & Christian ordered for me. I have been using in once a week to make it last. These bottles should be empty by the end of this week.
