Simplifying and decluttering our homes one item per day

Day 6: January 6, 2010
I'm feeling a little guilty as many in our blog have hit the ground running with their simplification. I am very excited for everyone! My guilt comes with just getting rid of another mug today. But...one per day is OK!
Don't be deceived. Some of us have enough clutter for multiple years! And some of us have so much clutter that we haven't gotten to the place where it is hard to part with things. The best thing about this venture is that there will be days when we only have the time or the heart to part with one item - and this place makes that okay!
So, Cindy, you think I can't use up all this clutter in the first month....HAH! I have enough for 5 years!!! Today I successfully threw away one clock. It works fine. My espoused bought it at the dollar store for my birthday and I HATE it! But it's gone now. I less successfully attempted to donate clothing to the "Clothing and Shoes" boxes in Central Park....but I had not placed them in plastic bags and tied them shut so they remain in my trunk (at least they are out of the house). So my grand total for today is only one. But that's OK.
I tossed an old mixer today. A friend gave me a new one for Christmas and I thought I'd keep the old one "just in case.." but today I tossed it. Pretty proud of myself :)
I found that I had an abundance of potholders! Maybe this is an analogy mugs:coffee :: potholders: ? Mugs is to coffee as potholders are to ? I got rid of 3 (one mitt and two squares). My son said that didn't even make a dent and asked why do we need gloves/mitts to have enough for every person in the family? We weren't all going to be taking something hot out of the oven at the same time, so why did we need them? Good question...my answer...I'm attached to them. I use different ones for different pans/moods/days.
It's 10:30 in the evening and I just listed 3 items on ebay! Wasn't sure I would get them on in time for today, so some more clothes were put in the "give away" box, and I returned about 15 clothing items to a friend. :)
It's a marathon, not a sprint.
ReplyDeleteWe can't use up all our clutter in the first month or we won't have anything to do the rest of the year!

ReplyDeleteYou ladies are amazing!
ReplyDeleteDoes scarfing down all the chocolate in the house count as getting rid of something?!
